# Reference objects, position and movement — English draft

This extends the earlier in/on/under pilot; it does not replace it. Check familiar nouns, accessible response mode and the relevant relation first. Start with a clear static contrast before introducing a movement path. Twenty scenes are a library, not a session quota or proof of mastery.

## Meaning first

Always agree which object is the target and which object or objects are the reference. The same ball can be under a table and beside a box. A true statement about a different reference is a relevance issue, not necessarily a false spatial concept. Between needs two reference objects. It does not require exactly equal distances.

Show whole objects, boundaries and support clearly. For paths, show the start, crossing and end; a final picture alone cannot prove into, out of or through. Toward does not require arrival. Do not infer a relation from pixel distance alone. Use live objects or a suitable reviewed sequence and keep the learner's access view valid.

## Teach, contrast, mix

Model one meaningful relation, then offer a fresh opportunity. Change the named reference, object, arrangement and question purpose gradually. Ask where-now separately from how-it-moved. Use one optional probe at a time; prior prompts can teach later answers and must be recorded as exposure/help. Following may mean directing an adult, not moving an object independently. Keep AAC symbols stable and allow time.

## Scoring and asking

Separate reference selection, relation meaning, movement path, expression form and help. Pointing or a short phrase can communicate location without proving sentence grammar. This draft uses human-reviewed keys; no automatic geometry or speech scorer is delivered. Invalid scenes, unclear interpretation, refusal and unavailable motor access are not incorrect answers. No speed or automatic mastery criterion is supplied.

For asking, reset with a genuine private placement by the partner. The child must not already know the location. A neutral invitation produces elicited asking; a where hint or model is additional help. Respond to the request and reveal the location. Interest in asking is optional. At home, use a brief voluntary arranging routine and record only what was observed.

## Reserved assessment

Four assessor-only routines and keys are in heldout_cases.json and heldout_keys.json. They are excluded from this lesson and practice narration. Check exposure across earlier location, action and number units and all languages. Novel routine labels do not prove unseen concepts; unknown history prevents a transfer claim.
